Kettlebell History
A kettlebell looks like a cannon ball with a handle and is a traditional Russian training tool that has been used for hundreds of years to develop full body conditioning and fitness. Their true origin is still a matter of speculation, but archaeological records show evidence of their use in Ancient Greece. They made their way to Russia in about 1700, where they were used as a weight measure for grain and goods. From being used as a weight for grain to a tool for athletic development and health, the kettlebell slowly developed into a sport of its own. By 1974 it had been officially declared the ethnic sport of Russia called ‘Girevoy Sport’.
The shape of the kettlebell allows for unique positioning of the weight allowing you to keep your hand and wrist in neutral alignment; this enables greater endurance and longevity in the core lifts so that you can produce a much higher volume of exercise and thus greater conditioning and fitness. Unlike a conventional dumbbell or barbell, the Kettlebell’s centre of mass is displaced from the handle. This means the weight constantly pulls against your hand and requires not only strength and co-ordination, but also the recruitment of other muscles through your legs, arms, shoulders and trunk.
Many of the kettlebell exercises will help strengthen the posterior chain in one hit, which includes all the muscles from the base of your skull to your Achilles tendons. For maximum strength for sports and sex appeal in minimal time, the posterior chain is where you should focus.
Training with Kettlebells
Training with kettlebells will develop hip thrust, the power generator for every type of sporting activity. The way kettlebells improves hip thrust is by incorporating drills such as speed, explosive strength, and hand-eye coordination. All of these components together enhance an athlete’s power. If the activity is jumping, kicking, or even throwing it comes from the hip. For any individual attempting to improve their hip thrust, kettlebells are an important training tool. Kettlebell workouts have long been a favourite of martial artists, wrestlers, throwers, jumpers, sprinters and also the special forces in the military. Such athletes and professionals need to be highly agile and strong and they do exercises that have a dynamic component to them. You can perform squats, swings, pulls, dynamic overhead snatches and clean & jerks. With Kettlebells, the possibilities are endless, as exercises can be completed in any order, flowing from one to another with little rest, giving you a great workout, while cutting your exercise time in half. Kettlebells will deliver the perfect combination of strength and endurance, cardiovascular fitness, explosive power, agility, stamina and fat loss. Any age, size, fitness level… any relatively healthy person can get started with the proper instruction.
